Schils, Trudie

Associate Researcher, Department of Economics

Trudie Schils is an education economist working at Maastricht University School of Business and Economics. She teaches and coordinates courses in the field of social economics and education economics. She also actively coordinates the master specialisation Social Economics, within Economic Studies (ES) and is master thesis coordinator.

Her current research focuses on the analysis of both student and school performance. She is interested in the role and limitations of using tests to measure such performance as well as in the various determinants of performance. For example, the relevance of including cognitive and non-cognitive skills when measuring student performance and including students’ social background and previous school history when measuring school performance.

Recently two initiatives within the group of education economics were started within which this way of research is conducted. The first is the Educatieve Agenda Limburg, part of the Kennis/as Limburg, a joint program between the Province of Limburg, all higher education institutes in the province and all schools from primary to tertiary education (www.educatieveagendalimburg.nl). The second is the Academische Werkplaats Onderwijs, a joint initiative of the Dutch Education Inspectorate and Maastricht University (www.academischewerkplaatsonderwijs.nl).
