Segers, Mien

Full Professor, Department of Educational Research and Development

Mien Segers is a Full Professor Corporate Learning at Maastricht University School of Business and Economics. She is actively involved in the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) and has been the coordinator of the Special Interest Groups Higher Education and Assessment. She has been publishing in many high-ranked journals, is on editorial boards, and as the chief-editor of the EARLI Book Series ‘New Perspectives on Learning and Instruction’.

Segers’ research is mainly focused on assessments, which are meant to give people feedback about their strengths and weaknesses, about what they can do to improve. Her central questions are: what effect do these assessments have on people? Does it encourage them in self-development? Do they show greater effort to increase their competencies? Will they use a different approach in how they develop their competencies? Do they learn more by receiving feedback from others? In other words: are pupils, students and employees indeed motivated by assessment?
